Our Heritage
Luxe Horizons was built on a conviction that the world’s most extraordinary places deserve the world’s most thoughtful stewardship.
Founded on a Simple Belief
In 2008, two conservationists and one architect sat at the edge of the Southern Ocean, watching an osprey ride a thermal above the cliffs of Kangaroo Island. The question they asked each other that day would define everything that followed: what if the most sustainable thing a lodge could do was make its guests fall irrevocably in love with the wild?
From that question came Southern Ocean Lodge — a property designed not to tame the island but to draw guests deeper into it. Sixteen years later, that same philosophy guides our second collection in Chilean Patagonia, and everything we will build in the years ahead.
The Founders
James Whitfield, formerly director of the Australian Wildlife Conservancy, brought the conservation framework. Elena Vasquez, architect and land-use specialist, designed structures that vanish into the landscape. And Marcus Chen, the third co-founder, built the operations model that proves luxury and ecological responsibility are not trade-offs — they are the same thing.
We never ask guests to compromise on comfort in the name of sustainability. We ask them to understand that the finest luxury is a landscape that remains wild.
— James Whitfield, Co-Founder
Our Collections Today
Southern Ocean Lodge, our flagship property on Kangaroo Island, remains one of the most acclaimed wildlife lodges on earth. Our Chilean collection, anchored by Tierra Patagonia at the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park, brings the same philosophy to South America’s last great wilderness.
